The semester is on! Only 3 days in, I've finalized my schedule and now all I have to do is start the homework cycle. If you know me, this would probably amaze you. Last year, I was dropping and adding and re-adding and dropping classes everyday of the first two weeks of each semester. That's just how I roll.  But not this time! MUAH HA HA! MADI: 1, COLLEGE: 0. (I realize that the actual score at this point is more like Madi: 5, College: 429, buuuuut I take my victories with 3251 times the gusto as BYU).

Although I couldn't be more excited about my classes, this semester does bring with it a tinge of bittersweet. In the foreseeable future, I will no longer have any classes in the Harris Fine Arts Center, my favorite building on campus. The HFAC, with its glass-railed staircases and art lined walls vibrating with some practicing ensemble, is the semblance of what I wish my house was. The kids that have class in this building are all aspiring artists. AKA, they have the coolest classes ever. They walk around carrying portfolios and camera bags, wearing concert black, or sometimes you'll see a model wearing some sort of flowing drape, and they just seem to know that they are the luckiest people in the world--they make life interesting for the rest of us. I've always wished that I could be one of the kids that was so good at an art, that I could feel confident wielding cases of instruments or canvases or scripts around campus, and when people asked me what I was doing with my life, I'd tell them, "Everything! I'm an artist!" And then I'd fly away on proverbial wings of creativity and bliss to the HFAC to join with my fellow student-artists in an informally orchestrated smorgasbord of beauty-invention.

Not kidding. I envy them.

And although I will probably always wish that I was the next Renoir, or Copeland, or Piaf, I know that my calling lies elsewhere. So I will be satisfied this semester to complete my history and english readings in some secluded corner of the HFAC, watching them walk by, and feeling sneakily glad that I get to share this space with them.
