This is not really a review of the Desolation of Smaug because I feel like I do not have the credentials to be reviewing that movie. If we're going to be honest, my #1 most constant review of this movie is as follows:
If The Hobbit trilogy was a sandwich, I would not eat it.
As I watched The Desolation of Smaug, I could physically feel the strain Peter Jackson was placing on Tolkien's novel. Although I was attentive throughout the entirety of this second installation (which I cannot say for the first), I felt like most scenes were completely unnecessary. When the final scene of the movie played, I was underwhelmed and not surprised. If you're going to stretch out a three day timespan of a novel that covers weeks of action into a three hour movie, something is wrong.
The #2 observation I have to share was something that has literally been nagging at my subconscious for months now:
Orlando Bloom looks distractingly older in a movie that is supposed to portray him as significantly younger than he is in The Lord of the Rings.
His face has filled out. His contacts are different. He just looks like a manlier version of the Legolas I know from ten years ago. The whole addition of Legolas to the storyline of this movie was a weird choice that I don't approve of at all, and the fact that he doesn't even look right only makes this part of the movie worse. But Kevin Kelly made it a lot easier to accept Legolas' appearance by telling me I should think of the fuller face/body as evidence of baby fat. He just hasn't thinned out yet.
I seriously cannot tell you how much better I felt after that thought was brought up. Thanks 4evr KK.
And I guess besides that I don't have much else to say tonight. I need to pack and stuff... But maybe I'll ttyl?
xo
happy new year
